You know those people who just glow? They look full of vitality and energy. The spark in their eyes, their clear skin, their shiny hair. They seem to never get sick. They look much younger than they really are! And you wonder – what is she doing?, what is she eating?. We all have that friend that fits the above description perfectly! So what is the explanation of being full of life physically, emotionally, and mentally? The answer, according to the ancient healing tradition of Ayurveda, can be found by understanding the concept of OJAS.

OJAS is the essence of all our tissues. It could be described as a substance or liquid in the body responsible for our overall health, vitality, and liveness as well as the strength of our immune system. It is created by your own body through proper digestion of foods that are good for your constitution. It is the powerful serum you produce yourself by living a healthy lifestyle to irrigate all your organs and tissues. To nourish them deeply.

Knowing the definition of OJAS helps us understand why our life choices might be compromising how radiant and beautiful we look. How often we get sick and for how long. How happy and content we feel with life overall. It’s crucial to understand that AGNI, another important term in Ayurveda, must be healthy and working properly in our bodies in order to produce the appropriate quantity and quality of OJAS. Agni, is the digestive fire in charge of converting the ingested foods into the substances our bodies can utilize to thrive. Therefore, if our digestion is out of whack, so it’s the rest of our health. It still amazes me knowing that a “trivial” digestive issue like heartburn or bloating suffered day in and day out can have, years later, such a big impact in our bodies! And of course, among those negative effects you can find:

  • Looking older
  • Having unhealthy, wrinkled and blemished skin,
  • Hair lacking luster
  • Getting sick frequently
  • Low energy levels
  • Fatigue
  • Insomnia
  • Disappearing of glowing radiance
  • Inflammation

Not only is digestion an important factor in the creation of OJAS but also our lifestyle. If you are drinking often, smoking, overworking, partying frequently and not getting sufficient sleep, spending too much time on social media, working out beyond your limits (I did this for years by training twice a day to be fit), or even having too much sex – OJAS is found in the reproductive organs and fluids – then OJAS will be compromised! In addition, if you are feeling stressed, angry, or depressed you are most likely depleting the essence your body needs so badly to flourish.

This post is intended to give you a “to -do list” so you can start purifying and increasing your OJAS. This is what you need to start doing now to reverse your aging process, become radiant and full of vitality, and avoid getting sick all the time.

  • Eat freshly cooked foods! Avoid microwaved, frozen, or canned food.
  • Almonds
  • Sesame seeds
  • Pumpkin seeds
  • Dates (soaked with ghee are a great OJAS food!)
  • Figs
  • Coconut oil
  • Olive oil
  • Ghee
  • Avocados
  • Sweet potatoes
  • Quinoa
  • Basmati rice
  • Tofu
  • Soy milk
  • Honey
  • Mangoes
  • Bananas

And others… now you might have noticed that these are foods that make you gain weight easily, and you are right! These are Kapha – one of the ayurvedic constitutions – aggravating foods. Which means if you are trying to get fit and lose some pounds consider eating only small portions. Also some foods might not be easily digested by you, so find an alternative that is processed easily by your body. As I mentioned before, an important role in building OJAS is also played by the lifestyle choices we make every day. There is no use of a good and healthy diet which even incorporates some of the foods listed above if you are feeling overwhelmed, anxious and worried. Our emotions are critical to our digestion -and elimination!- so we must check our daily routine and make some changes if we need to in order to produce some good quality OJAS. These are some tips you should follow 🙂

  • Establish a routine where you wake up and go to bed at the same time every day – or almost every day! Going to be before 10 is a great way to enjoy the deepest sleep you can get and build some OJAS during the night.
  • Meditate! This will calm your mind and nervous system which has positive effects on your OJAS creation process
  • Start your day with a devoted attitude towards God or the Universe. This helps purify your life serum. Pray and set a clear intention for your day.
  • Don’t over exercise!
  • Practice yoga or even better yin-yoga. This is such a nourishing practice for both your mind and body.
  • Practice Abhyanga or ayurvedic self-massage with oils. This will calm your senses.
  • Avoid drinking and smoking.
  • Keep a positive mind. Say sweet words. Do good deeds.

You could also use certain OJAS building herbs like ashwagandha for extra help. Drink it with non-dairy milk and some honey before going to bed.

The process of creating OJAS is one that requires willingness and a little bit of discipline. Be consistent every day and do something that soothes your body and emotions. This will in return not only produce more of this precious substance but will make you feel and look amazing!
